Distant 04:01
I watch the land grow distant Like everything that came before The tide takes me further From shore, once more But this time it's my body No boat to carry me Just flesh and bone, swept overboard Against the sea Thousands of voyages past The lengths of net we pulled onto the deck Years of secret shame The guilt was there but we had to make our way Chorus: And I want to throw myself into the waves Release my arms, sink to the depths And let the ocean take my name How can I live Knowing I was the cause of so much pain? What the ocean gives She can and will reclaim! Stripped of scales and dignity Not even eels were safe Everything caught in our drags Died in our wake By-catch thrown to gulls There were whales who could not come up for air I slit so many throats Or poured them out and left them gasping there Chorus I close my eyes To the darkening sky It's time, it's time Just then a soft shape Against my weary feet A seal has come To rescue me! Chorus I'm on the sand Somehow forgiven For these bloody hands

We rowed with our oars We fished with our hands Caught the riches of the deep And hauled them on land As time went on Our nets were empty We had to sail far To get what we need The call of London silver Was just too great... Chorus: Goodbye, Leviathon! Leave nothing for the devil! Took what wasn't ours With much larger fleets Pushed out other people Who'd been there for centuries If we could do it again We'd learn from our sins But to take everything Is industry's whim Until it's all gone Tired workers lose their jobs... Chorus

Birds fold into the sea Next to a rocky beach Do they realize their fate? Or are they very much aware? That there's less and less that's left To bring back to their rat-infested nests It wasn't always like this There used to room for gulls With rooks on caves and cliff-sides Invaded and raided beyond control Chorus: Is this the end of the ocean? Can we save what remains? What have we done to the water? Is this the end of everything? Upon the bloody shoals We take and take and take The scarcer it becomes The more money that we make It wasn't always like this Nature was free to behave its way The ships they just got bigger Spears, nets, hooks and oil devoured their prey Chorus

If, perhaps, we find a way to save you And on the way we figure out ourselves The tides of change turn finally in your favour We focus now on healing instead of hell To realize the world is not for taking Creatures, not commodities, themselves Compassion, wisdom, courage will be our saviours The strength to find a different way to live

about

Otta Sotta British Columbia

Otta Sotta: The End of the Ocean? is an alt-rock odyssey based on the ocean conservation work of Farley Mowat and his 1980 book Sea of Slaughter.
The project aims to bring awareness to the negative impact humans continue to have on the ocean - and, hopefully, to inspire people to come together to save what’s left.
All proceeds go directly to Sea Shepherd, in memory of Ian Macdonald.
